Sound design film idea

Synopsis – A young male competitor who wishes to pursue a career in the board game industry but is halted after he discovers that a family member is actually on the run and is wanted by the police; in order to protect his brother, he must do whatever it takes.

Sound effects – I plan to include sound effects such as police sirens together with a tense soundtrack to create a mysterious enigma that leaves the audience curious as to what happens next.

I have sourced a Thunder sound effect that I will use towards the end of the scene as the police sirens get louder and the police car gets nearer. This sound effect will be parallel as it will help create a suspenseful and tense atmosphere.

Voiceover – I may include a piece of voiceover to highlight the emotion and situation of the characters. Perhaps include a one-on-one direct address monologue – Phillip could explain that he is confused as to why his brother has come home but then he realises he has come home to seek help to avoid capture by the police.

Characters – Phillip (young male competitor); Tom (family member who is secretly wanted by the police)

Opening titles – I aim to use Saul Bass’ unique design of opening titles as inspiration for what I will use in my project. For example, before the opening scene starts, I will include the year and location of the scene in the style of Saul Bass.

Camera angles/shots

  • Wide angle (WA) – Phillip and Tom are seen playing a game of Monopoly, the shot will show the entirety of the two characters with the board game placed on a table

    • There will be an exterior long shot as the police siren gets closer to the house to show the audience that the police car is near to pulling up.

  • Close up (CU) – I will use this on both Phillip and Tom to portray the character’s emotions more clearly and highlight that Tom is feeling nervous due to being a wanted criminal. I will also film a close up shot of the Monopoly board.

  • Extreme close up (ECU) – I will film an ECU of Tom’s eyes to convey the anxiety that he is experiencing and to create a convincing and tense aura.

As Tom gets progressively more nervous, in the background you will start to hear police sirens and they will start quiet and get louder as the story progresses. When at its loudest point, the police siren will suddenly and very sharply stop, this will then be followed by some footsteps (Foley) and a knock on the door / a doorbell being rung (Foley).

After this, the opening will fade to black to signal the end of the scene.

creating audio in adobe audition cc 2018

00:00 / 01:29

Today, Tuesday 26th November 2019, our task was to create a non-visual audio only story using the software Adobe Audition CC 2018. Our tutor gave us a selection of more than 40 royalty free sound effects from which we had to create a convincing audio track that follows a basic storyline.

The track starts off with a guy starting up his car and driving off. This is underlaid with sounds of the rain and wind coming from outside. This is followed by the sound of a microwave opening from inside a house and then it is working and then it ends with a ping sound (as if something was ready/cooked).

As soon as you hear the ping of the microwave, a deep and loud sound of a lighting strike is heard in the distance to signify that something bad has occurred to the person operating the microwave. Whilst the lighting is heard, the sound of a continuous heart beat is heard to portray that someone is under pressure.

Then, another guy comes to the house when a piece of dialogue is heard "Hello? Anybody here?". Then, you can hear a car screech outside after which it then crashes. This is subsequently followed by a large explosion which is the sound of the car exploding and setting on fire.

The final sound you hear is of a morse code machine designating the sound "SOS" as if they are calling for help and there is no one else around.

In my sound design project, I will use the skills I have learnt today when it comes to editing the footage and audio to create an exciting and succinct sound design.
