On the left is a video from YouTube called 'Mastering Composition + Cinematography with Will Smith' created by D4Darious (Darious Britt).

This is a 20 minute video explaining composition / framing and cinematography with an example of a toy figurine of Will Smith in place of the real Will Smith

The video goes into detail about the importance of composition and framing and how this can influence and improve your film greatly.

Darious explains how the rule of thirds works where most things in frame have to be placed on intersecting lines / corners of a make shift grid so that it is pleasing to the viewer's eye.

Example 1 - Darious highlights how he has used the rule of thirds to place himself and the Will Smith figure on both the left and right vertical lines that intersect the grid. This shows correct use of framing to make the shot aesthetically pleasing to the viewer.

Example 2 - Here, Darious uses the technique of 'leading lines' to direct the viewer's attention towards his shoes and the right hand side of the frame. Also, his shoes are framed on the right hadns side vertical line of the grid so he has used the rule correctly here.

Example 3 - In this shot, Darious has shown how he has successfully broken the rule of thirds on purpose for effect. This effect is the short sighting of the frame to make the character feel a sense of entrapment and make the viewer feel as if he is trapped.

Most of the time, breaking the rule of thirds is not a good thing to do but this shot is a perfect example of how he made good use of not following the rule.
